Columbus Gardens
Ever heard of Columbus Gardens? Well, that’s just what the locals call them. Their real name is Jardines de la Merced, and they’re a hidden gem in the heart of Cordoba.
The origin of these gardens dates back to 1905 when the local government decided to design this beautiful park, full of plants and trees such as bananas, date palms, pines and orange trees. An oasis in the middle of a bustling city!
In fact many locals also call this park, the Small Retiro, in reference to the wonderful Retiro Park in Madrid.
Can you believe this park was once a bullring? Incredible but true. In the past the Plaza de Toros de la Merced-the first bullring in Cordoba-, stood on this site.
The centerpiece of the park is a stunning fountain designed in 1920. It’s so beautifully designed that all the park’s paths meet at this central point.
Very close to this fountain was built in 1940 a small mosque (El Morabito) that still serves the Muslim community of the city. In fact the foundation of this mosque has a curious origin. Although it is unknown to many, General Francisco Franco during the civil war (1936-1939) had required the help of Muslim soldiers from Morocco. After winning the war, and being established in power, Franco decided to build this mosque as a sign of respect and gratitude.
