Christ of the Lanterns in Cordoba

In the heart of Cordoba travelers can admire one of the most revered sculptures in Spain. Ever heard of the Christ of the Lanterns? It’s not just a sculpture; it’s a symbol of faith, hope, and Cordoban identity.

The Christ of Atonement and Mercy – popularly known as Christ of the Lanterns – is without a doubt, the most famous sculpture in Cordoba.

In the 18th century this charming square was part of the old convent of Santo Angel (religious Order of Friars Minor Capuchin). It was precisely one of the religious of the convent who was one of the promoters of this sculpture.

The Christ of the Lanterns (18th century) was made entirely of marble. At that time the gate that surrounds the sculpture did not exist. The gate was added in the 20th century.

In the 19th century the local government expropriated, like many other religious buildings in Spain, the convent. From that moment on, the square became a public place to which the people of Cordoba could have access.

Why is it called Christ of the Lanterns?

This question has a very easy answer. This sculpture represents the body of Christ on the cross. Around the sculpture were placed 8 lanterns that give the sculpture its name.  These lanterns are not just for decoration. These eight lights symbolize hope and guidance, illuminating the path for those seeking solace.

The lanterns in the 18th century were oil lanterns, but in the 20th century they were replaced by electric ones.

“This marble sculpture is really a very special place for the people of Cordoba”

Place of Devotion in Cordoba

For generations, locals have turned to the Christ of the Lanterns in times of need. Whether it’s for health, exams, or simply a bit of luck, people come here to pray and light candles. The energy here is palpable, and it’s no wonder this place has inspired poems, songs, and a movie (“The Christ of the Lanterns” directed by Antonio Molina in 1958). There is even a company of handmade potato chips in Cordoba called “El Crsito de los Faroles” 😅😅😅.

We suggest you visit the square at dusk or in the evening, when the square is empty of tourists, and admire the beautiful sculpture illuminated by lanterns and candles. Truly awe-inspiring. If you are a believer it is a wonderful place to pray and be alone with your thoughts.
